In-Plane Sight

The concept behind this exhibit is to show the messages citizens leave behind on ubiquitous signage, such as no parking, dead end, one way, etc. The placement of these messages is no mistake, considering these ubiquitous signs are everywhere, viewers will instantly recognize if there is something that makes the sign unique. The messages come in different forms such as tagging, stickers, and defacing the legibility of the signage. Emotionally these messages have a wide range from inspirational, Political, personal, rebellious, negative, and unknown.
The content was collected by walking around Salt Lake City taking photos of any signage with messages imposed on the original information. During the collective process I was a shocked to find around 40% of ubiquitous signage had other messages placed on them, however the size and varies quite a bit.
The goal is to put the viewer in a surreal city-like exhibit full of images of these authoritative messages with citizens personal messages. and to shine a light on the human instinct to strategically place our messages where other people are already looking.
